Colette Murphy was born in New Ross in 1975 and emigrated to the U.S. at an early age. She studied at Hunter College, New York, and graduated with a Masters Degree in Fine Art in 2008. After that she commenced studio work in Brooklyn and her exceptional skill was quickly noticed by astute art collectors, and she was selected for inclusion and illustration in The Open Studios Press publication New American Paintings, 2011.

‘The Chastitute’ is a solid distillation of the strengths of John B Keane – comedy, entertainment, and an unerring grasp of the darkness at the heart of Irish society. The ‘chastitute’ of the title is bachelor farmer, John Bosco McLaine. Now in his early 50s, John Bosco’s life is dominated by the lethal concoction of alcohol and loneliness. Living alone, with only his aunt to look in on him from time to time, John’s life of regret stems back to the fact that he has never married. In fact, he has never even lost his virginity. His lack of action, so to speak, is a combination of a number of factors.

The first issue of Fugitive Papers, a new publication on art in Ireland, will be launched by Megs Morley in Galway City Library at 6 pm on Tuesday 3 April. Fugitive Papers is an artistic research project by James Merrigan and Michaële Cutaya to explore the public role of writing on art. It aims at opening up a space for discussion and criticism around contemporary art practices. The first issue took as its focal point Tulca: After the Fall and proposes contributions by Joanne Laws, Gavin Murphy, Sean Lynch, Fiona Fullam and Valerie Connor.

A one-woman show performed by Katie O’Kelly that through multi-character performance (22 at least!) and magical word play, depicts the people who were of most importance to Joyce: his father and his cronies, Oliver St. John Gogarty, the tenor John McCormack, Alfred Hunter (the man who would later become Bloom in Ulysses) and, of course, Nora herself.
